Girls on the Run of Northern Virginia provides life-changing experiences for over 7,000 girls in Northern Virginia each year. We also provide transformational experiences for more than 600 volunteer coaches each season who share their time and energy to help create a positive self-image and healthy lifestyles among our participants. In 2011, we celebrated 10 years of service to over 25,000 girls in Northern Virginia.
Each of our 10-week seasons culminates in a 5K run that celebrates the achievements of the girls in the program and brings together parents, coaches, teachers, families and friends to form a community of support for the girls. Nearly 10,000 people gather to cheer on and support the efforts of each of the girls taking part in the 5K.
Our curriculum benefits all girls, and our program is one of inclusion and acceptance. Since our objective is to serve every girl who is interested in participating in Girls on the Run®, we strive to provide financial support to families with documented financial need. Historically, GOTR NOVA has awarded over $150,000 per year in financial assistance to girls throughout Northern Virginia.
Girls on the Run of NOVA, a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization, has broad-based support from community, business, academic, government and legislative leaders. Our constituents include the girls we serve each year, their parents and families, our coaches and volunteers, administrators and teachers from schools and community centers throughout Northern Virginia, local universities, government and legislative representatives across the region, and the businesses and other organizations that are partnering with us and donating resources to advance our mission.
At Girls on the Run®, we believe that community partnerships can have a dramatic impact on youth development in our region. Girls on the Run of NOVA has formed relationships with community leaders and organizations who share our goal of reducing the display of at-risk activities among young girls. These efforts have led to heightened awareness and collaborative relationships between these communities and Girls on the Run of NOVA. Our partnerships include:
