Happenings in NoVA

Ever since I joined Girls on the Run of NoVA last summer, my 10-year old son has been bummed because I work for an organization that focuses on girls of all things.  But when I told him and my 5-year old daughter that I needed a few minutes of quiet so I could write my Girls on the Run blog, my new job suddenly seemed cool to him.  In his mind, people blog about exciting things like building Legos, watching “Star Wars the Clone Wars,” and Tony Hawk skateboard tricks.

I’m not sure if my blog will ever be able to compete with all that, but I’m hoping that it will give you a front row seat into all that is happening here at Girls on the Run of NoVA.  And, that your front row seat motivates you to get into the action by letting us know how you feel about what we’re doing and where we’re heading (and maybe even volunteering to help us get there).

So, here in no particular order are some of the things we’ve been up to.

  • We hired a new national online registration vendor to make signing up for our program easier for everyone.  I think everyone will agree that this is a good move.
  • We moved into a nicer – and amazingly a much less expensive – office in our same building.  Because of item #2, we could afford item #1.
  • We’ve redesigned our web site.  Let us know what you think.  We’re pretty proud of it.
  • We’re expanding our Program staff so that their jobs are less hectic and we can ensure the quality of our program.
  • We’re starting a new sponsorship and fundraising program so we can provide more financial aid to more girls.

Not sure if all that measures up to Legos, Star Wars, and Tony Hawk, but it sure has kept us busy over the last few months.

As we head into our Spring program (hard to believe right now!), we’re hoping to connect with more of our coaches, PTA Liaisons, school principals, and parents so give us a call – you might even be able to get through to us because we’ve upgraded our phone system and now have more than one phone line.  And, for us, that’s pretty darn exciting.
