Snow Days and Spring Registration

Here at Girls on the Run, we’re used to challenges.  Like managing over 200 programs with just 2 program staff.  Finding ways to keep our promise of never turning a girl away for financial reasons.  Even persuading local companies to pass their less than perfect office furniture on to us (thank you Argon ST!).

But, really, dealing with a record 32.4 inches of snow the week we open Spring program registration!  This is definitely new territory for us (for all of us).

As with all new territory, all we can do is look at the horizon to try and see what’s coming next and come up with a plan based on our best guess.   So, that’s where we are with registration.

With most schools closed at least until Thursday, we’ve decided to extend our open registration period from Sunday, February 14 to Wednesday, February 17.  That way, those schools that are doing paper registration (Fairfax County you know who you are) will have extended time to collect their registration paperwork.  We’ll spend Thursday and Friday, February 18 and 19 processing all those paper registration forms and run our automated lottery the weekend of February 20 and 21.  We’ll announce the results of the lottery early the week of February 22.

We realize that this gives parents only a week’s notice before the Spring program begins, but at this point in this wacky winter wonderland, we all just have to go with the flow and make the best of this new territory we’re in.  And marvel at how Girls on the Run Councils of Southeast Alaska, Western Colorado, or Vermont ever manage to get their “spring” programs in.
