• Volunteer Opportunities

getinfoIf you are interested in helping pre-adolescent girls in Northern Virginia develop into strong, healthy, confident young women you have come to the right place.

Girls on the Run of Northern Virginia could have just the opportunity you are looking for – from mentoring a team of girls over our 10-week season to helping with our 5K run logistics to monitoring program delivery and quality, or just helping out in our Fairfax office. We have a job for everyone who wants to help.

    Coach

Serving as a coach is one of the most rewarding ways to get involved with Girls on the Run. Our volunteer coaches lead their teams through the Girls on the Run-developed curriculum, stretching and running activities, and training for the end-of-season 5K event. You do not need to be a runner or a competitive athlete. Successful coaches need only serve as a role model for girls by showing up prepared and on time, listening attentively, and by demonstrating a positive attitude! This position works closely with the Girls on the Run staff and requires a commitment of 2-3 hours per week for the 10 week season, with additional time required for the GOTR 5K race.

    5K Volunteer

There is a 5K (3.1 miles) run at the conclusion of each 10- week Girls on the Run program. Each 5k event takes over 100 volunteers to be a success. We depend on volunteers to serve as greeters, buddy runners, course marshals, manage start and finish lines, water stops, and much more. We have a job for everyone who wants to help! Register as a volunteer for the Spring 2014 5Ks here.

    Intern

Internships are available to college students, gap year students, graduate students, and recent graduates. Interns work closely with the Girls on the Run staff and are assigned various project responsibilities. Interns should expect to work on-site between the hours of 10:00am – 3:00pm. For Interns receiving academic credit for the Internship, GOTR NOVA will pay a stipend of $150 upon the completion of the Internship. For Interns who are not receiving academic credit for the Internship, GOTR will pay a stipend of $450.

    Weekly Office Support

Volunteers are needed to work in our office several days a week on a temporary basis. Volunteers answer phones, work on special projects, and provide general office support. If you have a special skill to offer, please let us know!

    One-time Opportunities

Do you want to get involved but can't commit to volunteering on a consistent basis? We have many one-time volunteer opportunities throughout the season. You might want to lend a hand in the office, help assemble race materials, or staff a cheer station at a 5K. Be sure to check back often to see what new opportunities we have available.

    Program Site Visits/Evaluation

Trained volunteers conduct 2 visits to one team during the season. The first visit will be within the first 2-4 weeks of the season so that the volunteer can meet the team, the coaches and the girls. During that visit, coaches may pass along questions they have as well as elevate any concerns. The second visit will be scheduled between weeks 6-9 of the season. During that visit, volunteers will complete a short, informal site evaluation checklist. The site visits help GOTR ensure uniformity of program delivery and quality, and allow us to offer feedback to coaches and teams. This is a great opportunity for organizations that want to volunteer as a group to help GOTR.

    Pro Bono Projects

Girls on the Run of NOVA has various projects in need of volunteers with professional skills in areas such as information technology, public relations, strategic planning, or finance. Do you have a skill that you want to provide to Girls on the Run of NOVA through pro bono service? Let us know!
