The impact Girls on the Run makes is dependent on dedicated volunteers like you, who are committed and passionate about our mission and vision.

Become a Coach

Coaches are the heart of our program! Each season, two or more volunteer coaches inspire and guide a team through our tried-and-true curriculum. If you're ready to directly make an impact, then this role is for you.

Become a junior Coach

Junior Coaches are needed to inspire the next generation! Our Junior Coach program is for high school girls aged 16 to 18. Beyond serving as a role model to program participants, Junior Coaches work alongside Coaches, strengthening their leadership skills and gaining a sense of belonging and purpose.

Substitute Coach

The substitute coach is a volunteer position within the Girls on the Run of Northern Virginia program that works with a team of coaches to facilitate the Girls on the Run curriculum to program participants. Time commitment will vary depending on the need for substitute coaches and your availability. This is a great opportunity for those unable to commit to coaching a full season or those wanting to “test out” the coaching process!

5K Volunteers

Our end of season 5K provides a tangible sense of accomplishment to participants. To celebrate and make the experience one to remember, there are many opportunities to get involved.

  • Packet Pick-Up - Help distribute 5K bibs and t-shirts the morning of the 5K
  • Registration - Help 5K participants register the morning of the 5K
  • Start/Finish Line - Pass out medals, water, and snacks as participants cross the finish line
  • Water Station - Pass out water at the water stop on the 5K course
  • Road Runner - Complete the 5K with a program participant, providing support and encouragement along the way
  • Course Marshals (16+) - Provide support and encourage safety along the 5K course
  • Cheer Marshals (16+) - Provide support and crowd control near the finish line of the 5K course
  • Corral Marshals - Help ensure participants remain in the corral, move up to the starting line, and start on time
  • Activity Station Helpers - Celebrate with GOTR participants before and after they complete their 5K with fun activities such as getting glam with Happy Hair and making shoe charm crafts
  • Bike Marshal (18+) - Bike along the 5K course, leading the running pack along the course route
  • Medical Tent Volunteer - Assist with documenting injuries and ensuring health/safety of participants alongside EMT professionals - medical knowledge/background not required, but helpful!
  • Team Packing (before the 5K) - Help pack team bags with bibs and t-shirts at our office before the 5K.

The 5K volunteer sign-up will be available closer to the 5K celebrations in November.

Team Adelaide

Team Adelaide members are a vital resource for Girls on the Run, acting as eyes and ears out in the field. Team Adelaide volunteers are assigned specific sites and will visit each site once a season during the site’s scheduled practice time. It’s a wonderful opportunity to see the program up close.

One-Time Opportunities
