Building Connections

“Deep human connection is ... the purpose and the result of a meaningful life - and it will inspire the most amazing acts of love, generosity, and humanity.” by Melinda Gates.

“Deep human connection is ... the purpose and the result of a meaningful life - and it will inspire the most amazing acts of love, generosity, and humanity.”

- Melinda Gates

Think about the last time you made a connection with someone. It could be as simple as a one minute conversation with a stranger to an hour long chat with a dear friend. Either way, how did it make you feel to share that moment with them?

Now put yourself into your own shoes as a young child. What connections do you remember forming? There were probably connections that led to meaningful friendships with people you may still be friends with to this day!

What about connections with mentors or role models? Do you remember how it felt to share your thoughts and feelings with someone you looked up to? If I had to guess, I would think it made you feel pretty good because I remember how confident it made me feel as a kid.

As a GOTR NOVA Coach, you can consistently deliver the same happiness to a group of kids! Our volunteer coaches do not need any prior running or coaching experience to make a positive impact in a young girls life. As long as you have the desire to be that positive role model that you looked up to as a kid or a passion to help young girls discover that they are capable of anything they put their minds to, you will be a great coach.

As a role model at Girls on the Run, you are not just impacting a participant’s life, you are growing along side of them. Following the spring 2024 season, 99% of coaches agreed that they formed positive relationships with the members of their teams and 99% of program participants reported that they felt like their coaches cared about them.

Sure those numbers are impressive, but read on and you can decide for yourself. Check out what some of our participants shared about their coaches last season.

  • “Girls on the Run is fun and the coaches are awesome.”

  • “Girls on the Run lets you meet new people and talk about different ways to help each other. The coaches are really nice and helpful.”

  • “I felt so included.”

  • “Girls on the Run is so much fun and the coaches are so nice!”

  • “Girls on the Run was a good, comfortable place that makes you strong and healthy.”

  • “Girls on the Run is really fun and the coaches are very nice, and it can get challenging but it's very fun to run and I would definitely recommend it.”

  • “Girls on the Run is a safe space and you should join (if you want) and everyone there, once they know you will welcome you.”

  • “Girls on the Run is very inclusive and makes you feel like you belong. We also get to meet new people and have fun by playing games.”

Without our volunteer coaches, we wouldn’t be able to deliver our transformational and impactful program. Consider becoming that positive role model for the girls in your community and come coach with us this fall.
